Specialist hip surgery

Hip revision surgery

Surgery to renew a hip replacement that has worn, loosened or become painful. Modern revision implants load the bone better, keeping it stronger for longer.
Resulting from worn, loose or damaged hip replacements.
Can involve changing the socket, the stem, or the whole hip.
Evaluation
History, clinical examination, X-rays and sometimes CT scanning.
Surgery
Usually longer than a 'first time' hip replacement, as we need to remove the damaged pieces before replacing with new specialist implants. We will also do our best to repair tendon damage etc at the same time, where possible.
Hospital stay.
Very variable- dependent on patient frailty, medical problems and the degree of surgery required. Usually 2-5 days.
Recovery.
A little longer on crutches (6-12 weeks).
