Implant choices

Which hip prosthesis?

Stephen chooses implants with a proven track record in published, peer-reviewed research and international registries. He also uses designs that take the widest range of bearings (the gliding surfaces), so each hip can be tailored to the person receiving it.
Uncemented stem · Younger, active patients

Corail

One of the best-performing stems in the world. Over 95% still work well at 20 years, and recent long-term data shows 92% lasting beyond 30 years.

Cemented stem

C-Stem

Developed in the same unit as Charnley’s pioneering hip work. Its polished, tapered design loads the very top of the thigh bone, and in at least one in five patients the bone actually becomes stronger after surgery (Professor Wroblewski).
Socket (cup)

Pinnacle

Takes modern large bearings and holds a 15A* rating from the national ODEP committee, the highest rating possible. It developed from the Duraloc, the most reliable cup of its time.

Hip resurfacing

Adept

The longest and best track record of any resurfacing device, which is reassuring for younger patients who need their hip to last many years. Over 85% are still working at 20 years.

Hip resurfacing

Recerf

At last! We have now had the ceramic resurfacing for over a year in common usage with 5 years of trial data before release. Performing superbly over the first 6 years. We can now resurface female patients who weren’t able to receive metal implants.
98% going strong at 5 years.
