Who it can help

Hip replacement is for people whose hip has worn out, most often from osteoarthritis. Some hips wear early because of a problem in childhood, so younger patients are treated too.

Osteoarthritis

Wear of the cartilage covering the ball and socket

Hip dysplasia

A shallow or misshapen socket from birth

Slipped upper femoral epiphysis

A growth-plate injury in childhood

Perthes disease

Loss of blood supply to the ball in childhood

Hip pain following fracture.

Recovery from hip fracture can lead to hip arthritis which can benefit from a replacement joint.

Risks

Larger head sizes now used make dislocation much less likely, and Stephen chooses implants with long, proven records to reduce the chance of further surgery
